I'm happy that others have taken up the noir jazz flag put up so splendidly by Bohren & der Club of Gore and Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. Unlike the rubato feel of those groups, Trigg & Gusset offer a steadier backbeat - are the drums programmed? - and weave in electronics, reminding me of, say, Kruder & Dorfmeister gone dark and brooding. Whatever the recipe is, the results are lovely, especially the string textures.

Ça y est : le voilà enfin, le saxophone ! La pochette de Nachtmusik, deuxième E.P. de The Midnight Ensemble, annonce son arrivée ! Et il n'y a pas que ça ! La basse ronflante n'est plus seule et de nouveaux instruments intègrent l'orchestre de jazz noir, notamment le piano ("Blood in Moonlight", "Architect of Coffins") ainsi que la guitare électrique ("Leash Fiend", "Gutter Angels"). Alors on attend, on attend, mais il n'arrive jamais. Puis on s'aperçoit que le saxophone est couché, gisant...
